
The Taddei Tondo is also known as The Virgin and Child with the Infant St. John. Michelangelo sculpted this circular relief in Florence, Italy in 1504-06. The sculpture represents a seated Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus who is sprawled across her lap. Jesus looks back over his shoulder towards the infant St. John the Baptist who is standing over him and offering a bird.The Taddei Tondo is located in the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly, England. It is the only marble sculpture by Michelangelo in the United Kingdom. It was purchased by Sir George Beaumont during a visit to Italy in 1821 and was left to the Academy in 1830.
Now, under an exclusive license from the Vatican Observatory Foundation, this masterpiece has been recreated in cast Carrara marble from a authorized mold derived from the original.
